Blowin' smoke

This tune has been stuck on "play" in my brain jukebox for the past couple of weeks:

(Warning: country music)

I first heard Kacey Musgraves playing on a radio while camping at Watkins Glen for the NASCAR race then heard a bit on her on NPR a few weeks later. The whole album is actually quite good.

It is a remarkable album because once you get by her wonderful voice and the hook-laden songs she wrote, you realize that the album is all about boredom—even ennui. She sings about how dreams outnumber possibilities, how small-town life is largely a matter of an object at rest remaining at rest, and how often people "settle like dust" instead of daring to hope for more. It is not a cheery record by any means. I've been listening to it in my truck for a couple of weeks now, and each time, I realize a little bit more just how sophisticated an album it is. Even "Blowin' Smoke" is a story of near-hopelessness, despite its catchiness.
