Good sports

I stopped by my favorite bar yesterday for lunch: a Big Ass Cheeseburger (that's what they call it) and some diet cola. As I waited for the burger to cook, I uninterestedly watched a college basketball team on one of the bar's TVs. During a commercial, I took a look at another TV across the room.

One of those no-holds-barred fights—what do they call it, Ultimate Fighting?—was on the screen. I started watching just in time to see one fighter blast the other with a big roundhouse right. The force of the punch put him flat on his back, clearly dazed and confused.

Then the other fighter jumped on top of him and started punching him in the head. Hard. So much for the adage of never hitting a guy when he's down.

To quote my friend Brian's take on modern American life: "Louder, meaner, dumber."

That pretty much sums it up.

I do not understand:
a) why that's considered entertainment and
b) how the human body can withstand what it looks like those dudes withstand

You know how much it hurts when you do something basic, like fall down, or bump your head on an open cupboard door, or stub your toe? It can be take-your-breath-away painful...how does a person get punched in the head repeatedly and survive it?

Something tells me those men and women have short careers.

Ten or fifteen years from now these Ultimate Fighters will be trying to figure out whom to sue for their post -concussion syndrome.

I don't get it either. You and i grew up during the resurgence of boxing...Sonny Liston, Frazier, Ali, and who could forget the "Great White Hope", Jerry Cooney. Cooney could barely function in life at the end of it and they used gloves. Well, they probably don't have silly rules on concussions. Where have you gone Spatacus !

Smokin' Joe seemed to have it together better than Ali. It's tough to see The Champ now. You may be confusing Jerry Quarry with Gerry Cooney. Quarry had a sad, sad end.

Someone - I think George Will, maybe - said football combines the worst features of American life, violence punctuated with committee meetings. I don't know how ultimate fighting fits into that, but there has to be a connection.

That's a classic quotation from Will.
