This blog's Washington bureau has been working on this story for weeks, and here it is: a world exclusive prediction about tonight's State of the Union address:

• Democrats will stand and cheer.
• Republicans will remain seated and look dour, unless the president says something like "God Bless America." Then, Republicans will rise begrudgingly and applaud half-heartedly.

Wait, you couldn't have predicted that he'd propose a kazillion trillion dollars worth of programs every human bean in the USA should be entitled to without bothering to explain to the Obamanation that ALL THOSE PROGRAMS COST MONEY. Oh, and that the Obamanation will blame the Republican'ts for not forking over the kazillion trillion dollars for all the awesome new ideas.

The State of the Union address is like the list kids make up at Christmastime for all the toys they want. The only difference is that in this case, the president writes the list.

And then, for folks like you and me, he brings us coal anyway.

I wanted to be inspired, energized, enthused...but barely into it, I'm thinking, "Well, yeah, but how are we gonna PAY for that rainbow unicorn pre-k program for every kid in America when we have inner city schools pushing through kids who can't f**king read?

I used to pride myself on being the most unpolitically minded person in the history of the universe. And yes, ignorance actually was bliss.

You and me both on that "ignorance is bliss" trip. I blame my interest in "politricks" (says Bob Marley) on Charlie Pierce—specifically, his politics blog on Esquire.com. His fever is infectious. Glenn Greenwald at The Guardian is another one. The two of them compelled me to look behind the curtain, except America's Oz isn't a hapless doofus. America's Oz had got one hand on a drone joystick and the other hand on a surveillance camera that's pointed right at us. And right now, the man behind the curtain is named Ozbama.
